Global mobility platform OK Mobility has announced their strategic alliance with Uber, as the ride-hailing company starts operating on the island of Majorca. The two companies join forces to respond to the significant growth in demand for mobility here. The mobility company remains firmly committed to supporting taxi drivers, and offering elderly passengers affordable and safe mobility options when they visit the Balearic capital.
The two companies will now offer special discounts to their respective customers so that they can combine vehicle hire with OK Mobility with using on-demand services via the Uber app. The North American multinational company will start operating from this Thursday, June 8, and will initially be available in Palma, Calvià, Andratx and Llucmajor, potentially offering services in other parts of the island in the future.
This strategic alliance responds to the significant growth in demand for mobility that Majorca has seen in recent years, especially in summer. According to data from the National Institute of Statistics, in the first quarter of the year alone, 41,2% more international tourists arrived in the Balearic Islands than before, the majority of them from Germany (55.5%) and the UK (13.5%). Uber data also indicates that more than 135,000 people used the app while staying in Majorca in 2022.
OK Mobility CEO Othman Ktiri said: “As part of our firm commitment to helping users get around our island, OK Mobility are delighted to join forces with Uber to continue offering residents and tourists more options, especially at peak times like summer. I know that Majorcans have missed this service, and I am very happy to make their lives easier and to contribute positively to Majorcan society.”
Uber's Spain and Portugal General Manager Felipe Fernández Aramburu added: “With this launch, we continue to promote Spain and use of taxis. We want to work hand in hand with Majorcan taxi drivers, the local tourism industry, and the authorities to improve mobility in Majorca.”
Finally, Javier Vic, President of the Hotel Association of Palma (ASHPAMA), explained that “all forecasts indicate that this summer is going to be spectacular, with very high demand from our main inbound markets and other emerging ones, such as North America. Having a new mobility system to help visitors is undoubtedly fundamental if we are to boost Majorca's image as a tourist destination. Any reinforcement to the current transport network that makes tourists' experience here more comfortable and improves quality of life for locals, will be most welcome.”
